Passenger cars and SUVs can produce significantly different axle loads from light commercial vehicles, recreational vehicles or emergency vehicles.
For this reason, the following information should be established before selecting a grass parking system:
- Maximum gross vehicle weight
- Maximum axle load
- Tire configuration
- Expected number of vehicle movements
- Parking duration
- Turning frequency
- Emergency-vehicle access requirements
- Soil/subgrade characteristics
- Local rainfall and drainage conditions
If fire trucks, delivery vehicles or other heavy vehicles are expected to use the surface, a dedicated pavement engineering assessment is particularly important.
Can You Park on Non-Infill Turf in Wet Conditions?
Extra caution is required.
Rain itself does not automatically make artificial turf unsuitable for vehicles. The more important issue is whether the underlying soil and pavement structure maintain sufficient structural capacity when wet.
If the foundation is saturated and poorly engineered, repeated vehicle traffic can cause:
- Rutting
- Settlement
- Aggregate displacement
- Surface deformation
- Drainage problems
This is one reason drainage and structural design should be considered together.
A well-designed permeable pavement system can be particularly useful for landscaped parking applications, but its actual performance depends on the complete construction.
