In a conventional infilled system, sand and performance infill can contribute to fiber support and stabilization. A non-infill system has much less reliance on loose infill, so the fiber system and backing construction play a more important role.
The main factors include:
- Fiber cross-sectional geometry
- Fiber polymer formulation
- Straight-to-curly fiber ratio
- Fiber Dtex
- Stitch density
- Pile height
- Tuft bind and backing strength
- UV and weathering resistance
- Drainage design
- Overall system construction
A well-designed combination can help the turf maintain its upright appearance and functional properties under repeated foot traffic.
However, higher density, higher Dtex, or a more complicated cross-section does not automatically mean better turf. The parameters need to be balanced according to the intended application.
