After rainfall, non-infill artificial turf can often drain surface water relatively quickly, but there is no universal drying time that applies to every installation. The time required depends on the turf’s permeability, backing design, foundation, surface gradient, drainage infrastructure, rainfall intensity, temperature, humidity and wind conditions.
For a properly designed outdoor installation, light rain followed by sunshine and airflow may allow the surface to become usable relatively soon. Heavy rainfall, low temperatures, high humidity, poor ventilation or inadequate drainage can extend the recovery period considerably.
It is also important to distinguish between surface drainage and complete drying. Water may disappear from the visible surface while moisture remains around the turf backing or within the underlying system.
For this reason, project owners should evaluate measured drainage performance and the complete installation system, rather than relying on a fixed claim such as “dry within two hours.”
