Several parameters should be evaluated together.
| Technical parameter | Relevance to drainage and drying |
|---|---|
| Water permeability | Indicates how readily water passes through the turf layer |
| Backing drainage design | Determines the pathway for water to leave the turf |
| Foundation permeability | Determines whether water can continue moving below the turf |
| Surface gradient | Directs water toward drainage points and reduces localized ponding |
| Drainage capacity | Determines how quickly collected water can leave the site |
| Pile height and density | Can influence moisture retention and evaporation around the fibers |
| Temperature and humidity | Strongly affect evaporation |
| Wind speed | Higher airflow can accelerate evaporation |
| Rainfall intensity and total volume | Determines the amount of water entering the system |
Water permeability is an important product indicator
When comparing non-infill artificial turf, buyers should request the manufacturer’s tested water-permeability value together with the test method.
Values expressed in units such as L/(m²·h) can be useful, but the number should always be interpreted together with:
- The applicable standard
- Test conditions
- Test method
- Product identification
- Whether the result represents the turf layer or a complete system
A high laboratory permeability value should not be interpreted as a guaranteed field drying time.
